| I am very interested in the tension between what is considered beautiful or grotesque. The push and pull of wanting to stare or touch something that is both tactile and pleasing while feeling conflict of its true nature being unappealing or dangerous.
My work explores the intricate relationship between the roles disease (how humans deal with it), nature and medicine play in the world today and how they can shape our identity (human vs. nature). I am drawn to the beauty of the micro biotic patterns but very cautious of the consequences of contact with or contracting serious illness. In a gentle way, I visually try to provoke people to be close to what I am fearful of being close to. By using extensive symbolism and repetitive pattern, I turn what was once considered to be unsavory (such as a fungal infection) or dangerous (blue ring octopus skin attracts potential victims closer) into a decorative “false skin” or protective coating against these harmful or unappealing agents. |
